Astrological Correspondences

by Beverly Hill

There are absolutely volumes and volumes about astrological magick, so I will only attempt to cover the basics with this.

It is a fact that the Sun and the Moon affect our lives. We, and all the animals and plants on the planet use the Sun's energy to grow and live. Lack of light is responsible for SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which causes depression in the winter time months for some people. (My depression is just because Santa never brought me that darn horse like I asked for).

The Moon is just as big a player as the Sun. It affects the tides, animal migrations, earthquakes (M.I.T. study proves that twice as many earthquakes occur on the New Moon and Full Moon than at any other time), and our own brain waves (since humans are made up mostly of water).

Is it any wonder that ancient civilizations built whole cities based on the rising and setting of the sun, moon, and stars? Whole religions were created. The conjunctions of the stars; the eclipses of the sun  and moon all figured prominently in people's lives.  Using this knowledge, it is easy to incorporate astrological information into spells and workings so that you will achieve more powerful results.

Down to Basics

The main moon phases are New, Waxing (first quarter), Full, Waning(last quarter). There are more phases, but I will start with these.

The New Moon occurs about 9 days after the waning moon. It is the time when the moon is dark.  It is a time of controlled energies, creation, new beginnings, and growth. Magicks to be done include abundance, harmony, regeneration, self-improvement, gardening, employment, and love.

The Waxing Moon occurs about 7-10 days after the New Moon. This is the time when the moon is building up energy before it slips into Full Moon.  Use the Waxing Moon to give your magic a little extra boost. Magicks to be done include strength, success, intuition and instinct, courage, elemental magick, friendships, luck, and motivation.

The Full Moon is the height of power. Use this phase of the Moon to lend the most power to your workings. Prophecy, Power, Dreamwork, and Creativity is most abundant. The Full Moon governs illumination, fulfillment, culmination, and completion. Magicks to be done include artistic endeavors, health and fitness, change and decisions, competition, dreams, family, healing, knowledge, legal matters, love, money, motivation, protection, psychism, and self improvement.

The Waning Moon occurs about 7-10 days after the Full Moon. This is a time of releasing negative energy, banishing (which can also be used to banish disease, illness, etc). Magicks to be done include addictions, divorce, health and healing, stress, protection.

Eclipses

Eclipses represent a union of the sun and the moon. Long term goals are worked for during eclipses.

Perigee, Apogee, and Equinox

There are also other times to consider the moon's effects. When the moon is at perigee (closest to the Earth), and at apogee (farthest from the Earth) are also excellent times to work magick. The equinoxes work the same way with the Sun. The vernal and autumnal equinox is the time when the day and night are of equal length. The Winter Solstice is the halfway point and the time when the Sun is closest to the earth; The Summer Soltice is the other halfway point and the time when the Sun is farthest from the earth.

Moon Void of Course

There is no easy way to explain Moon Void of Course, and it is even harder to chart it. The best thing to do if you are worried about Moon Void of Course is to look at an almanac that has a chart on it. The definition of Moon Void of Course is the transition of the moon as it passes out of one astrological sign and into the next. This can take anywhere from seconds to hours or even a day. It is never the same length of time. It is best not to work any magic when the Moon is Void of Course. Magick goes askew, emotions are out of balance, and nothing seems to go right. This is even worse if there are conjunctions of planets, eclipses, etc. It is described as the moon being in a place that is not a place, in a time that is not a time, but outside of time and space. It is intangible. I would explain it as the moon has the power to balance the cosmic energies of the universe, but when it steps out of "time", the cosmic energies have a free-for-all on poor little ole earth.

Conjunctions, Squares, Oppositions

This is for advanced workings, and by no means is it complete. After conjunctions, squares, and oppostions, comes sextiles, trines, ascending node, descending node, and retrogrades, but I am not going to cover those.

Conjunctions are when two planets occupy the same astrological space (or house in zodiac terms). Conjunctions can be positive or negative depending on what planets are involved and in what house. Conjunctions with Trines are positve, but I didn't write anything on trines in this primer.

Squares are when two planets are separated by 90 degress. Squares are generally negative.

Oppositions are when two planets are separated by 180 degrees. Oppositions are negative.

What is the importance of all this? When working magick, you want the planets to be in favorable alignment for the task at hand. Without resorting to astrology, there is still an easier way to achieve this (see below, planets, days, and hours)

Planets

The planets each have attributes given to them. It is best to perform a working under a planetary  sign that favors that working. Planetary signs also correspond to days and hours (see below, days and hours).

Sun: Legal matters, healing, protection.

Moon: Sleep, prophetic dreams, fertility, peace, healing.

Mercury: Mental powers, divination, psychic powers, wisdom.

Venus: Love, friendship, fidelity, beauty, youth.

Mars: Courage, strength, lust, sexual potency, exorcism, hex-breaking, protection.

Jupiter: Money, prosperity, legal matters, luck.

Saturn: Visions, longevity, exorcisms, endings.

This also lends itself to astrological correspondence as follows:

            Sign                 Ruler

            Aries Mars

            Taurus Venus

            Leo Sun

            Libra Venus

            Scorpio Mars

            Sagittarius Jupiter

            Capricorn Saturn

            Aquarius Uranus

            Pisces Neptune

Hours

Planetary hours are divided into two sets. The first is from sunrise to sunset, the second from sunset to sunrise. To do this correctly, you must use the chart below to coincide the time of sunrise or sunset in YOUR area. Planetary hours are useful if you cannot wait for a certain moon phase.
